History of the Eastern Townships
The Site focuses on the history of Bolton Township as it was created in 1797. However, let's first say that it is part of the Eastern Townships region, which is located in southeastern Quebec, Canada. This region was occupied by the Abenaki people for many years, it was then little colonized by the French and was an integral part of New France until the conquest by the British in 1760. The British began to colonize it from the end of the 18th century by dividing it into townships to distribute the territory among the officers of its army, but also among the New England Loyalists loyal to the crown. By around 1875, the region was predominantly inhabited by French Canadians. The survivors of the Abenaki people gathered in Odanak and Wolinak.
